20+ YEARS OF TECHNOLOGY LEADERSHIP FOR THE PAPER AND FOREST PRODUCTS INDUSTRY
APPTI is celebrating 20+ years of technology leadership for the Paper & Forest Products industry:
1992
Concept established
1994
Launched as the forest products industry’s Agenda 2020 Technology Alliance, a partnership between the American Forest & Paper Association (AF&PA) and the U.S. Department of Energy to identify breakthrough opportunities in manufacturing efficiency and sustainability.
2005
Broadened membership and became member-supported organization
2006
Released 2006 Forest Products Industry Technology Roadmap (contact APPTI for a copy)
2007
Began serving as project manager for Value Prior to Pulping biofuels program
2010
Released 2010 Forest Products Industry Technology Roadmap (click to download)
2011
Incorporated as independent non-profit organization
2012
Partnered with Teledyne Scientific & Imaging on DOE-funded R&D project for membrane concentration of black liquor
2012
Received IRS 501(c)(3) certification
2013
Launched action teams in five priority areas
2015
Launched projects on Press Section Modeling and Identification of New Delignification Catalysis
2016
Completed R&D roadmaps in each of the five priority areas; sponsored black liquor concentration project at Georgia Tech

Issued RFP’s for Next-Generation Pulping; commissioned three new projects, at Georgia Tech, University of Maine, North Carolina State University

Catalytic Pulping of Wood project, originated in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service and Forest Products Laboratory, wins DoE funding for supercomputing techniques to develop cobalt-based catalysts that can delignify wood more effectively

Joined RAPID, a DoE-sponsored Innovative Manufacturing Institute led by the American Institute of Chemical Engineers
2017
Issued RFP’s in Black Liquor Concentration and Reducing Paper Drying Energy; projects commissioned in black liquor concentration
